Freedom from Tyranny of the Urgent
By: Charles E. Hummel
“Is the clock a slavemaster- or a tool that serves you?”
“Are urgent things so pressing that you don’t have ‘inner time’ to sort out what’s really important?”
These are the kinds of questions addressed in Charles E. Hummel’s book, Freedom from Tyranny of the Urgent (not to be confused with the preceding book 'Tyranny of the Urgent'). This is a powerful and practical quick read of only 132 pages. No need to be intimidated, this is not dense materiel that's difficult to read through. It's Interesting, funny and so inspiring. There are a few different activities in the book you can choose to do or not. I personally did not do each and every one of them, but the principles, nonetheless, made a lasting impact. I can truly say that this book has re-oriented my mental framework related to how my time is spent.
For your convenience, I’m going to list a portion of the book’s outline below:
1. Where is Your time Flying?
Our greatest danger is letting the urgent things crowd out the important ones.
2. Jesus & Time
Jesus’ completed what the Father wanted him to do- and wasn’t frazzled in the process.
3. Managing Your Life
A refreshing new perspective can help us with our hurried schedules.
4. Is This Trip Necessary?
The crucial question is not short-term efficiency but long-term effectiveness.
5. How is Your Time Being Used?
There’s a difference between “quality time” spent with people and “quantity time” spent
6. Clock & Calendar: Friends or Enemies?
They can enslave us-or serve us. Like fire, the clock and calendar make good servants but bad
7. The Art of Saying No
You are indispensable only until the moment you say no.
I cannot fully convey just how important I believe it is to be reading material such as this. We live in such a fast-passed, do-all/ be-all society that can be extremely detrimental personally, relationally and communally. Therefore, it's all the more important to gain and maintain a biblical framework of time so that we may use it in a manner that is God-honoring.
If any of these topics listed above ignites a spark of wonder in your spirit, please don’t hesitate to grab a copy of this book and set aside the time to read it.
In view of God’s mercy,
